Orphaned Files Detector

Command status: ready ✅️

Docs status: reviewed ✅️

Ease of use: 5/5 🤓

Overview

The Orphaned Files Detector helps you clean up your Rekordbox music collection by finding two types of problems:

  • Orphaned files: Audio files in your music folder that aren't referenced in your Rekordbox XML
  • Missing XML entries: Tracks in your Rekordbox XML that point to files that don't exist It can optionally delete the orphaned files easily.

Why use this tool? Over time, your music collection can become cluttered with:

  • Audio files you have in your library but never added to Rekordbox
  • Files left behind after manual deletions in Rekordbox
  • Broken references from moved or renamed files

The Orphaned Files Detector safely identifies these issues so you can clean up your collection without losing any music that's actually part of your Rekordbox library.

Parameters

Path to Rekordbox XML file:

  • The path to your exported Rekordbox collection (usually rekordbox-export.xml).
  • This file will be read by the program but not modified.

Path to your music directory:

  • The folder containing your actual audio files.
  • This is where the tool scans for orphaned files.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Smart Scanning And Analysis

The tool reads your Rekordbox XML file to extract all track locations, and scans all the files found in your music collection directory.

2. Cross-Reference Analysis

The tool starts a two-step analysis:

  • It uses intelligent matching to identify files that exist in your folder but aren't in Rekordbox (those are the orphaned files).
  • Then it does the other way around, and search for entries in your XML file that it can't find in your music folder (those are missing XML entries).

The tool then displays the result in a comprehensive way so you know what are the files with issues.

6. Optional Cleanup (if you accpet it)

If you requested it, the tool deletes all the orphaned files reported, then gives you a summary of what's been deleted.

This is quite useful if you do some cleanup in your Rekordbox: after removing tracks from your collection, export your XML and run the tool so that it deletes the files you removed from Rekordbox.

Impact on Files

What Gets Deleted

  • If you choose to delete: Orphaned audio files are permanently deleted

What Stays Safe

  • All files referenced in your Rekordbox XML remain untouched
  • Your XML file is never overwritten

Safety Notes & Recovery

Before you begin:

  • Export a fresh Rekordbox XML to ensure accuracy
  • Do a backup of your music collection before deleting
  • Always make a simple analysis before you use the delete option.
  • Check the listed files to ensure they're truly unwanted
